Is Downloading Music Illegal?

Nowadays, the lines between what's legal and what isn't when it comes to the internet are fuzzier than ever. One of the most frequently fought about issues of the last few years - and one that is showing no signs of slowing down, is that of music downloading.

There's no question as to the legality of downloading music for free when it shouldn't be free - it's illegal. However, many people think that when they pay for music, that makes it legal. This actually isn't always the case.

Some websites set up shop and offer cheap music to download, but they may not necessarily be legal vendors of the products. Even if they are, this may only be the case in some countries. What is legal in one country may not be legal in yours - and it is factors like this that can make downloading music legally such a confusing business. How can we tell what's legal and what's not?
Well, the good news is that there are plenty of reputable, legal sites out there that you can download from to your heart's content. The even better news is that they are not impossible to tell apart from the illegal ones. The thing is, most of these sites are already well known - like iTunes, Napster (it's legal now!) and Sky Songs - which means all you have to do is pick one and sign up.

Of course, you can also tell which sites are legal when it comes to the price. Yes, downloading music legally costs money, whereas downloading it illegally is often free. But that's called stealing, and could land you in a lot of trouble with the law.

Most people like to think they make ethical decisions, and when it comes to downloading music, ethically, you have to pay for the goods you receive. However, you'll get to benefit from knowing that the artist whose music you buy is able to make a proper living thanks to your purchases and they won't be left feelin g like their hard work is being stolen.

MP3 music downloads are an excellent way to bulk up your music collection quickly and easily. Downloading a song only takes seconds when you have a decent broadband connection, and albums can be received in minutes. They're better for the environment thanks to the absence of manufacturing and packaging as needed for CDs and, when purchased legally, can be a fantastic way to enjoy old favourites and discover new music on your computer and MP3 player.
